baby lingo: weaning

simply defined: weaning is the period of transition for a baby from breast feeding to eating solid foods (link)

still this definition presumes that you breast-feed exclusively.. now what if your baby is not breast-fed, or what if you do a mix of natural and formula milk,,, does that consider your child to be weaned?

i don't think so,, to me,, in my humble opinion,, i consider weaning to be the time when you start introducing solid food to your baby,, regardless of whether they are breast or formula fed...

the uk's food standard agency,, the american academy of pediatrics,, and the world health organization,, all advocate exclusive breast-feeding until six months,, and then slowly introducing solids (weaning).....  in this part of the world,, the first thing you're told,, is that you don't have enough milk for the baby,,, you need to top up with formula,, you should start introducing solids (weaning) at 4 months,, that's why your baby is so small,, there are countless stories i've heard and actually experienced with my children,,, i never exclusively breast-fed,, and i didn't wait until 6 months to wean my children,,, so call me a bad mother,, but that's the best i could do,, and that's what matters,,

i'm straying off-topic here,,, anyway this is my definition of weaning,,, there's a great section on baby center's site dedicated to weaning,, take a look if you're interested,, you might find it useful...

just a quick note: remember we're humans,, we make mistakes,, especially the first time around,, we can't always be perfect and do everything the way people want us to,, so do the best you can do and don't feel guilty! the most important thing is that your baby is healthy and growing,, but always check with your doctor,,

thoughts on: the princess and the frog

first an african-american president,, so why not an african-american princess? it's about time!

disney's newest movie, the princess and the frog,, takes place in new orleans and tells the story of a prince turned into a frog by an evil voodoo magician,, he meets a beautiful girl who he mistakes for a princess and tells her that she must kiss him for the spell to be broken,,, but when she does... she's also turned into a frog! together they embark on a journey of finding someone to break the spell and return them to their usual state...

the unique thing about this all is that disney is finally getting its first african-american princess,, princess tiana,, i'm loving the name,, kind of like tiara,, <3

and the best part is that disney is returning to its roots with their classic movies,, the movie is being produced by john musker and ron clements, the same producers from the little mermaid and aladdin,, and the music is by Oscar-winning composer randy newman...

disney is already cashing in on the holiday season with them introducing over 1000 princess and the frog products in all their stores,,,

it's hitting theaters this saturday, december 11,, you can view the trailer below,,

can't wait ;p

shopping: for lanvin gifts

In celebration of Lanvin’s 120th Anniversary, Alber Elbaz, the venerable house’s creative director, has chosen to mark the occasion by honouring mothers and daughters in his famous production of limited edition porcelain figurines. This is in ode to the brand’s founder Jeanne Lanvin who dedicated her collections to her daughter Marguerite. The gorgeous figures – all made in that quintessential style and humour Lanvin is famed for – come in mother and daughter festive poses – as well as delectable paperweights sure to bring a gorgeous style element to any desk and bags that are the perfect Lanvin keepsake.

***they would make the most adorable gift to a new mommy out there,, or to a fun loving girl

thoughts: nicole richie coming back to tv

nicole richie has announced that she's coming back to tv,, only this time in a scripted sitcom,, she's doing a half-hour show that revolves around a modern mom trying to balance out her life and values,, modern vs. traditional (aren't we all?) the original idea is hers,, and she'll act and produce as well,, it sounds promising and i can't wait to see how it comes along..

in my opinion nicole richie has been an inspiration to many partying girls out there,, you can always change and settle down with a family.. just because you lived a careless life before doesn't necessarily mean that you're not fit to be a mom,, it all depends on your commitment to change and be a responsible parent,, you don't have to lose your mojo,, stay hip, trendy, and fun,, just know your boundaries..

ps. a giant hug for CB one of the coolest mommies out there <3

baby lingo: raccoon phase

i know i said that i'm going on a break,, but i've been inspired to write,, not sure how this break will go,, but i'll keep on posting,, they may not be as often as before,, but i'll stay in touch,,

now to my post,, i'm going to add a new segment where i add words that i'm going call baby lingo,, it's basically new words or phrases you discover with parenting...

todays phrase is "raccoon phase",, this is basically the phase where your baby starts opening drawers and cupboards and throws out everything in them,, it happens between 9 months and 18 months,,, usually starts when your child starts walking..sometimes earlier,, it may come with crawling,,,

i just discovered the name to this phrase via this article,, i know i'll be using it ;p
